Mindy O’Neall Announces Candidacy for Mayor of Fairbanks
Community-first leader prioritizes public safety, housing, and city revitalization
Fairbanks, AK – Mindy O’Neall, two-term Assembly member and current presiding officer of the
Fairbanks North Star Borough, has officially launched her campaign for Mayor of the City of
Fairbanks. “Fairbanks has taught me what it means to take responsibility for my community," O’Neall
said.
“I’m running because I believe Fairbanks can be a place where residents and
visitors feel safe, connected, and proud to call home. We deserve a city that’s beautiful,
accessible, and thriving, and that takes fresh energy and proven leadership. I’m ready to
lead that effort as Fairbanks’ next mayor.”
O’Neall has more than 20 years of experience leading community‐based organizations and
public‐sector initiatives focused on housing, economic development, and public safety. With a
commitment to Fairbanks and a proven record of public service, O’Neall brings a wide range of
experience from her early career work in restaurants, radio, the arts, and the business sector, to
roles with the Alaska State Legislature, Interior Gas Utility, Laborers Local 942, and currently as
the Executive Director of the Cold Climate Housing Research Center. She earned her BA at
Iowa State University and her MA at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
O’Neall’s campaign focuses on three key priorities for Fairbanks: public safety, housing, and city
revitalization, which she has helped develop during her tenure on the FNSB Assembly, as a
Planning Commissioner and as a member of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee to
FAST Planning. O’Neall has passed critical ordinances and funding for public safety, most
recently in the FNSB budget by appropriating $325,000 for emergency service patrol, housing
initiatives such as the tax incentive rebate for new construction and deregulating downtown
parking, and community development through support of the Downtown Plan which serves as a
roadmap for future development in the downtown area, suggesting policy and zoning changes,
and increasing the accessibility and vitality of the central business district.
“The City of Fairbanks has great bones, what it needs now is a heartbeat,” O’Neall said.
“With a community-first approach, we can restore our golden heart reputation. O’Neall’s campaign
invites neighbors from every part of Fairbanks to imagine what’s possible when leadership puts
people first.
“This isn’t just a campaign, it’s a community effort,” she said. “Together, we can shape a Fairbanks that’s safe, connected, and ready for the future.”
